During Learning Disability Week we spoke with the GOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties) group about their collaboration with Canterbury Christ Church University to assist nursing students with their training and hear what they think about it.
Fiona Wonford, GOLD Project Manager, Daniel Marsden, Senior Lecturer and Professional Lead in Learning Disabilities at Canterbury Christ Church University, and Ben, a Member of GOLD, who works with Canterbury Christ Church as a Co-Teacher, were interviewed by Academy FM radio; you can listen to the interview below.
Ben said: “I attend the simulation nurse training, so nurses can both learn and interact with a disabled person. At the meetings, they listen to us and hear our goals.”
Nicola, a Member of GOLD, said: “We went in pairs or individuals to see the doctors and nurses and talked about our hospital experiences and asked questions.”
David, a Member of GOLD, said: “I had my blood pressure, pulse, and temperature taken by the doctors and nurses.”
Neil, a member of GOLD, said: “We discussed our health passports and how it was good to use them.”
Sam, a Member of GOLD, said: “We talked about ways of communicating, such as speaking to the patient and not the carer, making eye contact when talking, and speaking slowly.”
Ben said: “We want to encourage everyone to have annual health checks as they are very important.”
Ben also shared: “I was interviewed by KMTV and Academy FM radio to talk about our work with Canterbury Christ Church University during Learning Disability Week.”
