Trying new sports at the East Kent Mencap 2024 Activity Day
Over 80 people with a learning disability who use East Kent Mencap’s services from Swale, Herne Bay and Thanet participated in the Activity Day. Everyone enjoyed trying out a variety of new sports and activities, which included football, boccia, table tennis, cricket, golf, seated exercises and more at the West Faversham Community Centre.
It was fantastic to have support from so many local organisations at the event, who put on activities and shared information about their work. We would like to extend a big thank you to Kent Football, Kent Cricket, Kent Golf, Radio Faversham, NHS One You Kent, Wild With Wheels, Beyond Words, Kent Libraries, Faversham Library, Darwin the therapy police dog and the ukulele Market Strummers.
East Kent Mencap CEO, Jason Gerlack and Operations Manager, Karen Roberts, joined in with the day, together with a team of dedicated East Kent Mencap Support Workers encouraged people to have a go at the activities and supported them to make the most of the day. We were delighted to have a fantastic team of volunteers from Network Rail, who kindly took a day out of their busy schedules to help make the Activity Day a great success.
The participants shared how much they enjoyed the day and what new activities they tried.
Kathy said, “The seated exercise class was lots of fun, it was good exercise and full of energy. I also did the climbing wall, which was a great experience.”
Karen said, “I liked the dancing and football. It was great fun!”
Rosie said, “I liked seeing all the organisations and finding out about them. I enjoyed The ScrapStore craft activity and stroking the therapy police dog.”
Lucy said, “The best thing was the football. Meeting Faversham Radio was awesome and I enjoyed talking to new people.”
Natalie said, “I tried the climbing wall! I like the crafts and the picnic lunch.”
The Activity Day was generously funded by Active Kent & Medway and Whitehead Monckton to support people with a learning disability to be more active. Thank you to everyone who attended the Activity Day and made it such a great active experience for people with a learning disability.
