We celebrated people with a learning disability and their amazing achievements during Learning Disability Week from 19th to 25th June 2023.
David said: “Sport keeps you fit and is good for your mental health. I recently took on a challenge to cycle across Thanet to raise money for the East Kent Mencap Spring Forward Challenge.”
David loves sport and attends our Fit Start club every Wednesday at our Ramsgate Hub. He also, plays football with Thanet Galaxy Pan Disability Football Club. He is achieving great things in sport.
Amy said: “Louise has taught me how to use the sewing machine. It was tricky to start with but I really enjoy using it now.”

David and Sam met at our GOLD (Getting On with Learning Difficulties) group. They have fallen in love and are now engaged.
Sam said: “I asked David to marry me, and he said yes! I am so happy. Some might think that if you have a learning disability you can’t have a boyfriend. It’s not true, I have a fiancé!”
David and Sam are achieving what they want out of life together.
Christine volunteers at a local Cancer Reasearch shop.
Christine said: “I have gained confidence within the role and enjoy my time here. I’d like to say thank you to all of the staff at the Cancer Research shop for helping me along the way.”
Christine is achieving great things being a volunteer.
Learning Disability Week Celebrations
At the end of the week, our Hubs held events to celebrate Learning Disability Week.
There was a delicious barbecue and dancing celebration at our Swale Hub.
A Fun Day was hosted at our Thanet Hub with music quizzes, dancing, and outdoor games at Dane Park.
Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued and treated equally. We campaign to support people with a learning disability, their families, and carers to make positive changes in society.
