Today marks the start of Learning Disability Week, with the theme ‘Do you see me?’ The campaign aims to highlight the experiences of people with a learning disability, emphasising the importance of being seen, heard and valued.
Throughout the week-long campaign, East Kent Mencap is amplifying the voices and achievements of the people who use its services, while also spotlighting the many challenges and barriers they experience.
One inspiring story is from Laurie, who has Down Syndrome and has been using East Kent Mencap’s Swale services for over 11 years. Laurie recently received recognition for his valuable contribution to volunteering in his local community.
Laurie’s commitment to volunteering was acknowledged with an invitation to the King’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Laurie had a fabulous day; he met the King and the Royal Family, enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea, chatted with the inspiring guests and admired the beautiful palace gardens.
Attending the event with Laurie was his Support Worker, Katie. She said, “It was a pleasure to be able to support Laurie to attend the Kings’ Garden Party. It was lovely seeing him alongside so many other people that work in our communities. Laurie immersed himself in the day and I felt very proud of him, especially when he signed along to the national anthem. What a fantastic memory for Laurie.”
Volunteering is a significant achievement, particularly for people with a learning disability who may lack the confidence to sign up; their contribution should be valued and acknowledged. By doing so, we are not only creating a more inclusive society but also building a stronger sense of community and belonging for people with a learning disability.
East Kent Mencap, CEO, Jason Gerlack, said, “We are campaigning for change to support people with a learning disability to lead the lives they want, whether that is to feel a sense of belonging within their community, for example by volunteering like Laurie, to find employment, or have the support they need to live as independently as possible.”
Join East Kent Mencap this Learning Disability Week in recognising the remarkable accomplishments of individuals with a learning disability, such as Laurie, and advocating for a world where people with a learning disability are valued, equally, listened to and included.
