Our East Kent Mencap Complex Needs and Thanet Hubs enjoyed carol singing at Westwood Cross with local musicians, The Thanet Ukulele Band, the Mayor of Margate Jack Packman, and Mayoress Mrs Karen Brinkman.
Reflecting on the event, the Mayor shared, “It was great to bring people with a learning disability together to celebrate Christmas in a safe, public space. Events like this remind us about the importance of community pride and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Today showed what equality, diversity, inclusion, and most importantly, belonging, can look like.”
At ASDA Broadstairs, the talented St. Lawrence College Junior School Choir wowed shoppers with their festive singing, adding to the joyful atmosphere and raising much-needed funds for East Kent Mencap.
Ms. Helen Caddick, St Lawrence College Junior School Director of Music, said, “The St.Lawrence Junior Chapel Choir were delighted to sing again this year to help raise funds for East Kent Mencap. It is always a special event and the children thoroughly look forward to being involved and to see the responses from the local community. The children were thrilled to learn that due to their efforts, £121 was raised for such a worthy cause.”
Our Herne Bay Hub hosted wonderful carol singing at Morrisons, Herne Bay. The group had been rehearsing for months and the performance brought joy to local shoppers and spread festive cheer throughout the store.
Tharina said, “I liked to see people smiling when we were singing.”
Shorne said, “It was fun and a good laugh. I enjoyed entertaining people.”
Harriet said, “I loved singing and signing the songs.”
Vicki Wilks, Senior Support Worker, said, “It was a joy to be leading the carol singing today and seeing the public join in. We all had a great time and a huge thank you to Fay at Morrisons for accommodating us (and the mince pies)! Everyone has worked so hard over the last few weeks and to have raised over £100 in less than an hour is fantastic.”
Thanks to the generosity of local shoppers and the hard work of everyone involved, the events raised over £346 to support our work with people with a learning disability.
A big thank you to Thanet Ukulele Band, the Mayor and Mayoress of Margate, St. Lawrence College Junior School Choir, ASDA Broadstairs, and Morrison’s Herne Bay.
Your contributions helped make the events a great success and will make a real difference in the lives of people with a learning disability this Christmas.
