At a recent wellbeing session at East Kent Mencap’s Herne Bay Hub the atmosphere was filled with excitement and happiness as everyone enjoyed a special visit from therapy ponies, George and Spud. This event was made possible through the generous efforts of East Kent Mencap’s Senior Support Worker, Vicki, who organised a raffle to raise funds for the experience.
Therapy ponies can be extremely beneficial to vulnerable groups, especially people with a learning disability. Vicki loves horses and was eager to share their wellbeing benefits with the people who use our services.
Vicki said, “I was thrilled to create this opportunity with ‘George and Friends, Pony Therapy & Parties’ for everyone at the Herne Bay Hub to enjoy. The excitement and happiness in the room filled my heart with so much joy.”
For East Kent Mencap members like Lesley, the presence of the ponies was truly magical. “I loved the ponies,” Lesley shared. “They were soft and nice to brush.” The gentle nature of the ponies provided a sense of comfort and joy. The ponies even wore little black indoor slipper shoes to protect their feet and the Hub floor.
Kelly Forrest, East Kent Mencap Hub Co-ordinator said, “We would like to thank Vicki, George and Friends Therapy Ponies, and all those involved in making this amazing event possible. Supporting our member’s mental health and wellbeing is so important because it helps individuals to face life’s challenges in a strong and positive way. Everyone deserves special moments of happiness like this one with George and Spud.”
