East Kent Mencap has launched a new partnership with gas distribution network, SGN to provide free energy advice to people with a learning disability across East Kent. The partnership was officially announced at a celebration event hosted at East Kent Mencap’s Swale Hub on Friday 25th October at Trinity Road, Sheerness.
The new project, which will run for 18 months, offers crucial guidance on using energy safely and reducing energy bills.
Jason Gerlack, CEO of East Kent Mencap, said, “We are delighted to partner with SGN to offer essential energy advice for people with a learning disability across East Kent. Making sure this information is accessible and easy to understand is crucial, and our trained team is dedicated to ensuring that the advice is person-centred, helping to keep them safe and save them money when they need it most.”
Through the new service, individuals can get help signing up for the Priority Services Register, which provides dedicated support during disruptions to electricity, gas, or water supplies. Gain information about locking cooker valves and assistance in applying for one at no cost. You can also learn how to stay protected from carbon monoxide and receive a free carbon monoxide alarm.
Central to the project’s success is the co-production between our team and service users, working together to ensure the information is accessible. For example, all materials will be in easy-read format, specifically designed for people with a learning disability to enhance understanding. Additionally, some service users will be trained as energy champions to act as ambassadors for the project and share energy information with others.
Lee attends the East Kent Mencap Swale Hub and has recently transitioned from supported living to living independently. He is an avid cook and volunteer and has felt the financial strain of rising energy bills. After receiving free energy advice through the partnership, Lee said “I now feel much safer at home and know how to protect myself. I am sure I will save money this winter thanks to the tips I have learned, and I want to share this information with my friends and family.”
Janet Duggan, Community Partnership Manager, said, “We’re committed to keeping our communities safe and warm and we know people with a learning disability are uniquely impacted by higher than average energy costs. By working in a joined-up way with East Kent Mencap, we’re able to reach those who are really struggling and provide much-needed energy advice. Through building strong connections we can help vulnerable households get much-needed help.”
