The Swale Day Resource Team was in desperate need of a parking space for the Day Resource’s minibus, and faced the very real risk of losing it. Luckily, Gordon Henderson, who is the MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, was able to obtain a space for the vehicle at the council.
Lauren Kay, our Swale Day Resource manager, explained: ‘I contacted our MP to ask for his advice and within a few weeks his secretary got in touch to say they had secured us a free, permanent parking space from the Council, just metres away from our Resource Centre in Sheerness!’
The minibus is now in its new home and our Sheppey members, keen to thank Mr Henderson in person, arranged to meet him in the car park.
Mr Gordon Henderson said, ‘I was delighted to join East Kent Mencap on a socially distanced visit to see the parking space they have been allocated by Swale Borough Council, following representations I made on their behalf. I am pleased I could help them, but I would not want to take all the credit, some of which goes to Council staff, who made the two car park spaces available… Credit is also due to the Leader of Swale Borough Council, Cllr Roger Truelove, who was very sympathetic when I raised the problem with him, and ensured that a solution was found quickly.’
With restrictions lifting, Sheppey members are looking forward to going out and about in the minibus.
